The Importance of Having Your Car Regularly Checked
People rely on their vehicles to get to work, school, sporting events, the gym and go on vacation. Unfortunately, too often people don’t consider having car maintenance done until something goes wrong, and a car that has been neglected will need to be replaced years before it should be.
The importance of having your car regularly checked cannot be overstated. Regular auto maintenance keeps vehicles running more efficiently, safely and for many more miles than a vehicle that does not receive regular care. Many people never bother to take their car in for servicing, thinking that since the vehicle is running fine they are saving a lot of money. However, once a problem does arise it will almost certainly be more expensive to remedy than if routine maintenance had been performed.
Some examples of major, and very expensive, problems that are most often preventable with inexpensive routine maintenance are worn out engine position rings and bearings due to a lack of regular oil changes and a failed transmission because the filter and fluid were never changed. Failure to have the vehicles brake pads or shoes checked, and replaced when needed, can lead to damaged brake rotors and drums and an extra several hundred dollars in repair costs. Failure to keep tires adequately inflated will cause tires to wear out, and even fail, thousands of miles sooner than tires that receive standard care.
Regular vehicle maintenance procedures, such as tune-ups, oil changes, brake inspections and tire rotation, are a wise investment, and as important to car care as regular visits to the doctor are for people. The Automobile Association of America, or AAA, recommends many inexpensive service procedures be done regularly.
At a minimum, tire pressure should be checked each month and an oil and filter change, along with a belt and hose inspection, should be performed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Brakes should be inspected and tires rotated at every other oil change. Wheel alignment should be checked and air and fuel filters changed every 24,000 miles. Automatic transmissions require servicing every 24,000 to 100,000 miles.
